The problem isn’t that people classify autistic people as mentally ill, the problem is that mentally ill exists as a classification. The problem is that we have a paradigm of pathology instead of diversity. The problem is that we have a paradigm of conformity, not of quality of life.

don’t take mentally ill away from people who actually are mentally ill, dude. My brain isn’t ~diverse~ and ~adverse to conformity~

it’s completely broken.

That’s…not exactly what I meant and I thought I had made it clear with my last sentence about quality of life.

It refers to how treatment of mental illnesses/psychiatric disabilities are geared towards making society more comfortable with an individual rather than improving the quality of life for a person. I don’t need to tell you that psychiatry doesn’t care about how neurodivergent people feel; if they’re internally screaming while “passing” that’s considered progress.

I don’t have a problem with people trying to change their brain to improve their quality of life; it just doesn’t need to be in the medical/pathologization model which is stigmatizing and acts in horrific ways against psychiatrically disabled/mentally ill people.

Like if you want to identify that way that’s totally fine. I’m not here to attack psychiatrically disabled/mentally ill people for their language; I am here to attack psychiatry for its bullshit.
