Subcomandante Marcos was a character made up by the Zapatistas. They literally invented Marcos to be their “leader” because outside media wasn’t taking their leaderless activity seriously.

Stepping down a couple years back, the person who plays the character of Marcos said, “Marcos, the character is no longer necessary… His character was created and now his creators, the Zapatistas, are destroying him.”

“The handover of command is not due to illness or death, not to an internal shift, purge or purification […] Those who loved and hated Subcomandante Marcos now know that they hated and loved a hologram.”

The media still doesn’t get it, but it’s funny as hell.

Do you ha the source to this?

Here are the quotes, but I can’t find where I read that he was made up. The quotes are pretty explicit about the whole thing tho.

It makes the fact that officials in Chiapas tried to spread rumors that he was gay even more hilarious and the response even better:

“Yes, Marcos is gay. Marcos is gay in San Francisco, black in South Africa, an Asian in Europe, a Chicano in San Ysidro, an anarchist in Spain, a Palestinian in Israel, a Mayan Indian in the streets of San Cristobal, a Jew in Germany, a Gypsy in Poland, a Mohawk in Quebec, a pacifist in Bosnia, a single woman on the Metro at 10pm, a peasant without land, a gang member in the slums, an unemployed worker, an unhappy student and, of course, a Zapatista in the mountains.

Marcos is all the exploited, marginalised, oppressed minorities resisting and saying `Enough’. He is every minority who is now beginning to speak and every majority that must shut up and listen. He is every untolerated group searching for a way to speak. Everything that makes power and the good consciences of those in power uncomfortable – this is Marcos.”

— Subcomandante Marcos

(Edit: They invented him specifically because people were looking for a Che Guevara figure where there was none.)
