Thing about corporations. The powerful (whether rich or popular or otherwise) have always shaped society – their ideas more likely to become reality than those of the powerless. But they were individuals, with whims and pet projects and other people whom they liked and whose interests they wielded power in as well as their own. In short, they had personality, and so their effects on society, while arguably not a net benefit, at least had interesting variations. Not every rich person through history has been the kind that has no goals bar being richer.
But corporations are exactly that kind of rich person. As hard as we in the advertising industry try to convince you otherwise, corporations have no personality. A company owned and operated by one or a couple of individuals might reflect their values and interests, but shareholders, having nothing in common but the act of financial investment, dilute the effect until nothing is left except profit-seeking.
This is why modern capitalism is so boring.
