Today on tumblr: Blood/plasma donations are really an example of the evil capitalism and we should all be offended that legit companies will pay people to donate blood/plasma because capitalism is evil.
Have I mentioned how much I hate this website at times?
Okay news flash:
People have been donating blood/plasma for decades.
Why?
Because people need blood and plasma to live you idiots!
It’s a really simple process. If you are a healthy abled person (always check with your doctor before donating anything) then you can help an unhealthy and/or disabled person by donating some of your blood/plasma so that they can do that thing called living.
I literally cannot believe I have to explain this but tumblr is…well…tumblr and there are people legit freaking out over that post.
There’s a reason many consider this website a laughing stock.
But I digress. If you are verifiably healthy (again, see a doctor) then consider donating blood/plasma. You are literally saving lives. And yes, oftentimes, these legit companies will give some sort of incentive via prizes or monetary sums because they need the blood/plasma for the people who are dying. Did I mention there are people dying? Because there are people dying. And now, thanks to idiotic tumblr posts/blogs, people are going to refuse to help because they think it’s what the evil capitalism wants.
TL;DR: Donating blood = good. Donating plasma = good. Idiotic tumblr posts = bad.
i don’t know the specifics of the post that inspired this, but what’s missing from this picture is the who and why
you’re right, donating blood/plasma is absolutely essential to saving lives! & i highly doubt that anybody is upset over just the concept of being compensated for a life-saving donation, but
what a lot of people ARE upset about is the fact that centers paying for blood & plasma donation are much more common in low-income areas & many people donate as much as legally possible (which may push the limits of what’s healthy for some people) due to economic stress
so it’s not that some folks are getting paid to occasionally donate some blood/plasma to people who really need it, it’s that [deep breath] capitalism has resulted in a class of people who literally need to sell what’s in their veins to try to survive.
everyone who’s able should donate whenever they can! nobody should be forced by poverty to donate as much or more than they physically can so that they can feed their families.
in australia we don’t give people money for donating to avoid the exploitation of the poor and vulnerable.
donating blood and plasma is a great thing, if you are able and willing, one million supports for you!
there is something fundamentally broken about offering money for donations of body substances. it’s a sign that people are being let down on multiple levels of society.
blood supplies shouldn’t be that low, people shouldn’t be so desperate for money that they have to sell blood.
I know exactly which post sparked this and you’d have to be either really bad at comprehensive reading or purposely trying to miss the point to misd that it was a post about CAPITALIST EXPLOITATION BEING A BAD THING not blood & plasma donations.
This post here is the textbook definition of a strawman argument, trying to make Tumblr bloggers look ridiculous by claiming they’re against plasma donations when they’re just against the poor being coerced into plasma donations as part of their exploitation under capitalism.
