I’ve been considering also adding some disclaimer along the lines of
“I’m extremely happy that a brave woman is free after having beeb imprisoned, tortured and driving into a suicide attempt. I am so happy for her. No one deserves that. In her free future I hope she has a wonderful life full of healing and safety and support.
But I am not falling into the trap of assuming that just because she is a trans woman political prisoner or just because the radical organisations that I love all supported Chelsea Mannings, she is going to have opinions that match my own. I know very little about her actual opinions on most aspects of most things, and so do all of us. Everything we have heard of her has been defined by her situation inside the prison system where she obviously could not communicate freely.
Activist communities have often expected great things from someone based on what they represent rather than what opinions they actually hold and that’s not a smart thing to do.
If we set her up to be some kind of hero beyond reproach we’re likely to be hugely disappointed.
