Uhhhhhh…….Not only that, but Lyft sent out an email this morning pledging to donate $1,000,000 over the next four years to the ACLU. AND they just had an expansion, so they’re available in more cities now. AND they have weekly deals. This week, I get 20% off of evening rides. We don’t fuck with uber no more.
Uber is DEAD!
Deleting my Uber app now
Always used Lyft during my drunken nights
One of Lyft’s investors is Peter Thiel, who is on Trump’s transition team. They along with Uber have been fighting against their drivers’ attempts to unionize. Lyft, like Uber, has argued they don’t have to provide vehicles accessible to those with disabilities in order to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act because they’re a tech company, not a transportation company. Just like they’ve argued they don’t have to provide drivers with a living wage, benefits, etc. because they don’t consider their drivers employees. Their donation is purely opportunistic PR designed to get your business and one-up Uber while they continue to exploit their drivers and produce unsafe environments with zero accountability.
You’d be better of supporting cab drivers, who are at least capable of unionizing for better benefits and pay and who are the people who were actually striking in solidarity with the protesters in the first place.
Thank yoooouuuuu both these companies kinda suck.
Both Uber and Lyft also function as exploitation of workers. Like… they don’t pay fair wage, they shift all burden (insurance, vetting expenses, maintenance) onto the drivers.
Just… fucking call a cab y’all. They’re generally unionized, they’re actually having to function within a whole matrix of regulations, and you’re not then incidentally supporting some gross tech bros who thinks that by destabilizing the few things that help to protect people in positions like cab drivers counts as some epic “disruption.”
Both Uber and Lyft have always been toothless tech boy propaganda. Both have always been tied to investors with shit politics and practices.
(On a sidenote that doesn’t invalidate any of this: be aware that poor disabled people exist as well as other people who need these transport services and can’t afford the local alternative. Do not attack your activist buddy for using one of these services.)
