Daloy Polizei (Fuck The Police) by Geoff Berner

Well, the verdict is in; Murderer Darren Wilson will not even be charged for killing Michael Brown in cold blood. This is a huge failing for our society. There is no excuse for this travesty of justice, and though this is a very public case, it is far from an isolated incident. Racism and racial prejudice are alive and well in the United States of America.

There is little to no accountability for police officers in this country. If an officer is fired for misconduct, they very rarely see any kind of criminal action taken against them and there is nothing stopping them from going to any other police force in the country and getting a job there. There is no licensing agency for police officers; so, while a doctor can be banned from practicing, or a lawyer can be disbarred, a police officer cannot be stopped from serving in any force that will hire him.

Beyond the individual officers, there is a problem with the militarization of the police forces in this country. The equipment used by officers now is often the same equipment that is used by military forces around the world. This seemingly began with the cultural shift from the “War on drugs” in the 1980s. By simply adding the word “War” to something that is run by the police, the mentality began to change and the police began gearing up for war, and now, 30 years later, there is little difference between a police officer and a soldier in the army without their helmet. Some police forces have even purchased military surplus tanks without any justification for having a tool of war that would potentially be used on the people that they are charged to protect.

I think that these problems have a similar cause, money. War is very big business, and when you have run out of wars to supply you need to find a new market. So the war mongers began marketing to police forces, and stoking the fires of hatred wherever they can find them.

I have social anxiety, which is essentially post-traumatic-stress-disorder that revolves around having had many bad social encounters throughout my life; mainly emotional oppression and bullying as a child. These things are a form of injustice, so any injustice gets my blood boiling and that black hole in my chest opens back up. Despite my asocial personality, I am a pacifist and a socialist. Still, it seems to me that we are heading toward a French Revolution type situation pretty quickly. I have always disliked the US because of my experiences as a child. I was bullied by people that were heralded as “good” by the cultural norms of this country, so I learned to hate the mainstream of this society. But now, with obvious racist murders being unpunished, I think it is time to seriously consider finding a new culture to live in (I hear the socialist Scandinavian countries are nice). I feel that this society is not salvageable and I do not want to be a part of a bloody revolution that brings about the necessary change. I truly hope that things can change for the better, but sometimes it just doesn’t seem likely. Namaste.

Daloy Polizei (Fuck The Police)
by Geoff Berner

I’ve played a lot of places
and I’ll play them all again.

Everywhere I go I hear the same old thing again.
Somebody dies in police custody,
soon there are questions from the family.
At first the situation makes those lawmen look so filthy,
then they investigate themselves and it turns out that they’re not guilty.

Hey hey, Daloy Polizei
It means the same thing now as yesterday,
Out of your houses, into the streets
everybody say “Fuck the police!”

Ian Bush’s parents didn’t know he was a killer,
when constable Kessler picked him up for an open can of Miller.
The video at the station house had somehow got erased
but the bull was there so we can know exactly what took place.
He said, the boy jumped on his back but the cop was quick instead,
he reached around and shot him…
right in the back of the head.

Constable Kessler would not demonstrate just how this thing was done
if you think that it’s impossible then the coroner’s not alone, well

Hey hey, Daloy Polizei
It means the same thing now as yesterday,
Out of your houses, into the streets
everybody say “Fuck the police!”

There must be something magic down in the holding cells
because there’s stuff that happens there that just don’t happen nowhere  else.
Healthy people dying from a sudden heart attack
and men who hang themselves with their hands tied behind their back.

There’s lots of good and brave police, it must be true I guess.
well at least it’s brave to work with a murderer sipping coffee by your
desk.

Hey hey, Daloy Polizei
It means the same thing now as yesterday,
Hey hey, Daloy Polizei
It means the same thing now as yesterday,
Out of your houses, into the streets
everybody say “Fuck the police!”

Daloy Politsey is originally a Yiddish folk song about the political struggles of Jewish socialists, communists, and anarchists, in Russia and Poland. It started as a protest song where every verse a protestor would improvise the words based on some injustice, and the refrain would remain the same.
