HEY HI HELLO I AM HERE TO TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE TOPIC JEWISH NONBINARY GENDERS

ahem

yeah so we have 4 nonbinary genders!!! or. like 4 trans genders. 2 are binary but 2 are nonbinary

androgynos: sort of controversial as to who can and can’t use it, as it refers to someone who is biologically male and female. i personally don’t think non-intersex ppl can use it because it seems to be intersex-only, but im not intersex, so any intersex ppl who wanna comment on it can totally correct me.

tumtum (thats me!!!): cutest name ever, to begin with. second of all, has a “hidden” gender. really hard to explain but the tumtum is p much just “yeah you can do whatever you want”. they have the choice of presenting male or female and it can change and stuff. its somewhere between genderfluid and agender.

saris: trans woman!

ay’lonit: trans man!

tum,,,,,,,,tum,,,,,,,,,,,, im crying ?? thats so awesome

i cant believe i didnt know this

so this has some weird information on it that i need to correct and expand on.

first of all, regarding androgynos: we’re not actually sure about this one. we don’t have many (Any?) sources from judaism on this being a gender. it’s possible that it’s a word that we adopted from greek when we realised it was a thing we didn’t have a word for, it’s also possible it’s not a thing.

second of all: “ay’lonit” is not the same as “trans man”

ay’lonit is a third gender used by transmasculine people in a binary centric language (hebrew).

this is an important distinction because the idea of a trans man as a binary gender is a really new one. most cultures that i know of outside of the west have third genders that are recognized separately from the binary ones. by referring to a third (or fourth) gender as binary trans we are inadvertantly upholding the binary, ie, if you are masculine identifying you must be a man.

that’s not to say they can never be the same thing – i refer to myself as a trans man because it’s easier than explaining my identity, but i’m not binary.
