Y’all understand that it is literally not possible for gay couples to be heteronormative. A masculine gay man dating a feminine gay man isn’t heteronormative. A butch lesbian dating a femme lesbian isn’t heteronormative. They’re fucking gay. Telling gay people they’re somehow enforcing heteronormativity by being themselves and dating another gay person is nasty and ridiculous.
mhmm yes that’s why we have words like homonormativity & homonationalism to describe the phenomenon of gay couples perpetuating white supremacist settler colonial capitalist assimilatory monogamist nation-building practices.
Jup, and for the record homonormativity isn’t “a masculine gay man dating a feminine gay man”. In fact, homonormativity only has a very very narrow window of how feminine a gay man is allowed to be.
Homonormativity is gay men pushing the idea that the only right, ‘civil’, ‘family friendly’, ‘good representation’ way to be gay is to be gendernormative, monogamist, middle class, liberal, nationalist wearing the kind of clothes your neighbours would approve of.
For some really striking examples of this, check out any cartoon that defends marriage and adoption by same sex couples. These images always feature the same ‘respectable’ atractive thirty-something white guys wearing sweaters and dress shirts, who are mirrored against the ‘unrespectable’ working class, non-mongamous, fat, failing straight household.
The message is clear: only by being outstanding respected middle class white monogamous white supremacist settler colonial capitalist assimilatory citizens can be earn the right to be treated the way straight people are.
That’s homonormativity.
