Children should have the right to leave their guardian(s) at will. Children who are too young or inexperienced to take care of themselves should have alternate guardians appointed to them. It’s just sick that children of abusive parents are forced to endure further abuse when the state–which may or may not be sufficiently motivated to investigate abuse allegations–fails to find compelling evidence to remove the child from the control of their abusers.

Child welfare laws should prioritize the well-being of children over the ‘rights’ of their guardians.

this is also a good reason to have social welfafre services available to elderly and disabled people. otherwise people end up in a situation where they either have to put with abuse to take care of their parent or literally allow their parent to die.

it’s far preferable to not have people in the position of having to make that determination and instead know that their parents won’t be thrown onto the streets or a nursing home or starve without them. otherwise, even if people are given the ‘right’ to leave in the opinion of the state, they might lack the ability to do so in practice.

the good news is that social welfare is also extremely achievable; there’s no reason why society should need to be structured differently.

You could say the same thing about disabled adults who are financially dependent on their abusive parents which brings up the need for basic income or at the very least a massive re-structuring of disability assistance (not like a lot of abused adults will be able to get on disability because, well, abuse).

I focused on children, though, because while trying to escape abuse from family members is hard as hell when you’re an adult there’s just nothing quite like having the cops hunt you down when you try to protect yourself by running away.

the nuclear family should be destroyed

Ye goddamn right it should be!
