Something that cisgender gay folk need to respect about trans women is just how marginalized and taboo being who we are really is. That’s what, I think, is lost so often when we talk about ‘queer’ and why so many trans women fight so hard to hold on to it in the face of discourse that seeks to erase it. I know that’s quite a leap but let me explain…
I become just a little bit uncomfortable every time I hear our community described as ‘LGBT.’ I feel uncomfortable because ‘LGBT’ and other acronyms are specifically designed to be inoffensive. But as far as cisgender people are concerned my very existence is offensive! So when I’m confronted by cisgender people who strictly adhere to gentle, unassuming language like ‘LGBT’ I can’t help but wonder if their commitment to not offending others might be greater than their concern for people like me who can’t help but offend.
It doesn’t help that we’ve suffered a long history of being scapegoated in the name of ‘progress.’
That isn’t community.
