Reproductive justice means not expecting trans women to shell out ~$500 a year to a sperm bank or face sterilization when many of us live on less than $700 a month.
Oh hey… that ~$500 a year figure? That’s for one sample of sperm. In other words one attempt at conception. That’s bullshit. If you’re looking to actually have a chance of conceiving a child that isn’t a total dice-roll you’re going to need to double or even triple that figure in order to preserve a larger quantity of sperm.
Also your ability to even use that sperm after you’ve gone through all that expense will almost certainly be subject to the lab’s terms and conditions which means your partner had better be HIV- and free of all kinds of genetic conditions that the lab (or the government) think are icky.
Oh… shit… did I mention HIV? Yeah… even though we have the technology to effectively wash sperm of any residual viral load you’re likely to not even be allowed to bank sperm if you’re HIV+.
It’s called eugenics, people.
That little bit at the end about HIV is important. Transgender women worldwide are almost 50 times as likely to contract HIV compared to the general population with an infection rate that’s close to one in five.
