the fact that moen’s latest manifesto on the sexual dignity of cucking is like 99% uncritically gushing about how enticingly empowering it is to engage in these elaborate fuckrituals of supér masculine humiliation with only this like briefest most off-to-the-side disclaimer note about how the concept of cuckolding miiiiight, sometimes, have some racist connotations is incredible but not surprising
also i love that she thinks anyone using the word “cuck” as an insult is explicitly referring to cuckolding anymore lmao. like… it’s so removed from its original meaning the comic had no point??
She doesn’t seem to get that “cuck” as an insult comes from /pol/ and stormfront users very actively trying to push the idea that white men who support the increasing rights and freedoms of women and people of color would allow their wives to sleep with a black man (they’re nazis so they don’t say “sleep with” or “black man” but I think the point is still clear) just to avoid being called racist or sexist. “Cuck” as an insult is very intentionally and specifically designed to associate progressive politics with the racist paranoia that “black men are trying to steal white women” and the sexist paranoia that “your girlfriend definitely isn’t satisfied with you and wants to cheat, if she isn’t already cheating on you” and really no amount of having a character say “uwu watch out every once in a blue moon the porn might seem racist” can change the fact that both the fetish and the insult are built on a racist trope and intentionally pushed into the public lexicon by neo-nazis
I guess it’s a good thing that Erika Moen immediately apologized about this and is working to fix it.
Also: Oh Joy Sex Toy is an educational comic about sex. It would be rather off topic to launch into a treatise about the use of the word cuck by 4chan.
This comic was meant to inform people about a specific kink–a kink which may have a racist history, but does not need to be inherently racist or sexist. If you had actually read the comic in good faith you would get that. Plus, it’s not fair to assume that Erika isn’t aware of reasons why 4channers call people “cucks” just because she doesn’t explicitly mention /pol/ in a sex ed comic. This is not to say that Moen’s handling of the topic was 100% perfect. I agree with some of the core criticisms, and I’m glad that she has acknowledged the issues and is fixing them. But I have seen enough nitpicky criticisms of Erika, especially from the lesbian community, to know that her critics are not always acting in good faith. Biphobia runs deep, guys.
A lot of the criticism against Moen’s work is totally based on her content though.
She runs a sex toy webcomic that claims to be super duper progressive but only ever caters to the ultra rich who can dish out $100+ for a sex toy. Even when she claims to offer budget options she reviews $50 and over toys.
Also like many other crappy sexpositive bloggers her entire ethical framework around sex doesn’t just start with consent, it ends there. At every turn does she ignore how much living in this society fucks up our ability to choose and to consent and how many kinks reproduce highly oppressive tropes or just straight up reproduce rape culture.
Her cuck post was a classic example of that but she does it constantly. Even if she had properly acknowledged the racist content the completely ignored the blatant sexism to the point of acting uncritically celebratory about a woman who felt ‘empowered’ about surrendering to a strong man.
This sort of liberal sex positivity that only ever considers ‘choice’ and brands all more complex conversations around sexuality as ‘kink shaming’ is gross as fuck.
