So I feel like I’ve seen people comment on the fact that the sort of person who constantly brings up Harry Potter or Hungry Hungry Games is also the sort of person who thinks we should sign petitions against foreign intervention and other sorts of reformist stuff. And that it’s ironic because of the fact that the characters in these books literally violently overthrow the evil people.

But I think the reason is that the oppression in these forms of media (and like Star Wars) is always a sort of metaphor for the oppressions and tyrannies in our lives, rather than like a direct example. They are fantastical dystopias, that are symbolically related to our world. So it would only follow that their form of #resistance also flipped this metaphorical, symbolic sort of style. That’s how you get people saying that a McDonalds tweet clapback destroyed homophobia or whatever bullshit thing that didn’t actually do anything is somehow “actual resistance”
