My grandad’s mother died when he was very young. They couldn’t afford a private burial plot or any kind of marker. A few years ago he managed to track down the grave and was finally able to pay for a stone to put on top of it.
The article implies that some of the graves being sold off only date back to the second world war. Many of these people could well have living relatives who, even if they don’t visit today and the council can’t track them down, could still be searching for them.
“Just because people were poor and didn’t manage to get those fancy headstones, it shouldn’t mean those people don’t matter.”
