its propaganda. People vs Police sentiment was at an all time high right before the first serious cop dramas came out in an effort to show people the kind of danger cops are in to lesson the tension and create empathy for them. Also to increase recruitment numbers.

Cop shows love showing how cop’s “instincts” are always right, how torture is cool if you’re the “good guy,” how laws protecting the innocent just protect criminals because cops always know who’s really guilty, etc.
It’s telling everyone: “Trust the system. It works.”
^ yeah thats really it. and like the problem isn’t the state, its working racialized communities abusing the “freedoms” of America or some shit. and white bulky men in suits who are stoic are our “heroes.” Fascism requires ‘heroic’ figures.
And when that didn’t obviously work anymore it started using other tactics:
– The corrupt cop narrative where the heroes uncover a well hidden corruption and stop a corrupt cop or a small group of them, showing that the bad ones are just exceptions who will be stopped if the good cops get to do their work.
– Progressive storylines, where a cop solves the murder of a trans woman, driving home the meesage that cops protect minorities rather than brutalize and criminalize them.
– Diverse characters, where the hero cops are gay, black, awkward, quirky, dorky, but in the end all communicating the message of humanizing cops and obscuring their violence.
Every cop show is propaganda, justifying cop violence and obscuring the innocence of their victims, no exceptions.
