Fun history fact of the day with a touch of nerd:
In 1979 Janice Raymond, one of the creators of TERFs as a movement, wrote the extremely transphobic book The Transsexual Empire. The book is a work of hate against all trans women but her main target was trans woman, academic, activist and artist named Sandy Stone. Comparing trans women to nazi’s and just about everything else, The Transexual Empire is considered to be one of the most transphobic books ever written.
In 1987 Sandy Stone published the groundbreaking manifesto The Empire Strikes Back: A Posttranssexual Manifesto, which mostly ignores Raymond’s work and instead makes a passionate defense of moving from ‘passing’ and hiding to open living as transgender and writing our own stories. The piece did what the Star Wars reference in the title promised: undermining the roots of Raymond’s work and sparking a wave of new writing by transgender academics. As of 2007, The Empire Strikes Back has been translated into twenty-seven languages and has been cited in hundreds of publications.
