Common neonazi symbols, an incomplete list. Correction: The sign listed as Pegida is not commonly used by Pegida but is used by the northwest Europe based neonazi Identity Movement.

Especially relevant for people moving within the Black Metal-Scene

Yes yes yes yes yes, while there are nazi’s in other music genres, they’re huge in metal and actually get booked at non-political metal festivals like it’s no big deal! Disgusting shit. Also keep an eye on:

  • Album titles and band names that have two words both starting with the letter S.
  • Nazi number symbolism (18 means Adolh Hitler, 88 means Heil Hitler, 14 means a lot of bullshit and the three get mixed together to make numbers like 1488, 8814 etc)
  • Songs with nazi phrases like ‘blood and honour’, ‘ blood and soil’, ‘

    My Honor Is Loyalty’

  • References to German military units. If a band is called Panzerdivision… yeah…

There’s more but these are some obvious starting points to spotting nazi metal.

Damnit, a bunch of these are important religious symbols

Some of which I didn’t know had been appropriated by nazis and have been using

Even though I didn’t know I still I apologize greatly for using them

I see a lot of responses like this and I can relate, but I wanna share this post:

Anonymous: im neo-pagan and am interested in norse & celtic mythology/symbolism/etc , but i know neo-nazis have been co-opting a lot of norse shit into their nazi things. what should i be avoiding that they have “claimed” or should i just step away from that stuff altogether?

Let us tell you a little story from the 1990s.   One of the original SHARP skinheads we know was at a party when someone said, “hey man, why don’t you drop the whole skinhead thing so people don’t mistake you for a nazi?”

Our friend explained it thusly: “let’s say you loved golf.  No, you REALLY loved golf!  Golf was your everything.  Your whole identity was about golf.  Then one day, some losers showed up at the golf course with some shitty golf clothes and cheap golf clubs.  They clearly don’t know much about the game and can’t play it very well. But they are good at being racist assholes and attacking people with their clubs.
“Are you going to give up the thing that you love; the thing that you identify the most with; the thing that makes you you because some racist assholes showed up and are wrecking it?  Oh hell no you’re not!  You’re not going to let them steal and ruin what wasn’t theirs to start with.  So you’re going to get your other golf-obsessed friends together and run them the fuck off the links and out of the sport altogether!”

So whether you’re a neo-pagan, or a skinhead, or a golf fanatic – when bigots show up pretending to be part of your scene, take back what they’ve stolen from your culture and then run them the fuck out.

Since you’re a neo-pagan, we’ll make it easy for you to get started by pointing you in the direction of Heathens United Against Racism.

FORE!

So yes, you can chose to move far away from certain runes and symbols, or from heavy metal, or from skin head culture. You can boycot the parts that are taken and invent new alternatives. That’s all acceptable choices. But there’s a second option:

You can keep it all and make it loudly, passionately, and in every breath blatantly anti-fascist.

That’s also an option, just throwing it out there.

Regarding the algiz and odal runes

  • Algiz can definitely be a red flag, but is not inherently bad. If you see it, feel free to be suspicious and keep yourself safe, but its original meaning far as we can guess is simply “protection” so you might see some non-fash (norse) pagans with the rune
  • Odal represents heritage and inheritance. Easy to see how it could be translated to fascism, though again not inherently. The version in the graphic is not inherently a fascist symbol, so if you see that one just be cautious.
However, if you see the odal with the wings

Then unless this pagan is very, very ignorant, you are dealing with a fascist.

  • Triskele/Triskelion – blocky ones as previously depicted seem to be the more fash ones. The rounder ones, such as the one below, tend to be used by the good Celtic pagans

Also, HUAR is good for Asatruar (Norse pagans) such as myself, but there are also some organizations for Neopagans who don’t worship the Norse gods. Unfortunately, I forgot what they are. If anyone knows good resources similar to HUAR but for Celtic pagans etc, please add to the post!
