One of the things I dislike the most about all this gatekeeping is that there’s always this idea of some acceptable form of _____ identity being pushed by the gatekeepers as proof they’re not just being hateful. And people who share that identity will turn against each other if they’re desperate enough to be seen as one of the acceptable whatevers.

Like during bi discourse there were plenty of bi women joining in with all the biphobia and decrying the “bihets” just as vehemently as anyone. And some of them probably did so because they agreed with the discourse. But others did it to distance themselves with the bi people who gatekeepers had deemed “basically straight” so they wouldn’t be the next target. Bi people dating someone of the same gender were “uwu valid we love you” but bi people with someone of a different gender were “straight people invading the community and stealing resources” so they didn’t hate bi people, just “bihets”

And now in all this mess it’s “otherwise LGBTQ+” aspec people being told “uwu you’re valid we love you none of this is about you” so aphobes can say they don’t hate aspecs. But just like with biphobes and the bi discourse they may claim to love a highly specific form of aspec person but their posts and misinformation are harmful to all aspecs. And while they’d never admit it (or they’d immediately become “not acceptable”) I would be extremely surprised if there are no aspec exclusionists who are on the side they’re on just so they aren’t the target.

TL;DR Gatekeepers always claim there’s some “acceptable” form of whatever identity they hate (and also often shift the goalposts. You have to be a ____ person who’s never done _____ or interacted with _____ people and believe_____, they can always add more conditions), so they can claim it isn’t the identity they hate just a specific part, and this idea that you can belong to that identity but still be acceptable to the people you see spewing hate causes people within whatever identity to turn against each other to avoid becoming a target for gatekeepers.
