All memes die eventually but I doubt we’ll see anything sadder than pepe the frog becoming a nazi symbol

Honestly, who cares about pepe the frog? Memes are plentiful, as infinite as our creativity, and by nature they only last as long as someone pays attention to them. So fascists claim a victory because they managed to impact the meaning of one meme? Who gives a shit! Instead of reinforcing the idea that fascists have ‘won’ something by claiming something as insignificant as a meme, I think we should be focussing on how much it says about online fascists that they think something as pathetic as this constitutes a win.

Good point. It’s not like he held any real meaning to anyone in the first place.

As I see it Pepe had definitely peaked long before as a meme anyway and his increasing use by /pol/ etc was occurring as he was already declining elsewhere and other people were getting tired of him. So it did nothing more than hastened what would otherwise have been a more protracted death.

While his “afterlife” is unprecedented as far as memes go, it definitely isn’t any kind of “win” for fascists. Even if claiming a cartoon frog could in any sense be counted as a victory.
