Honestly one thing that makes me angry about the riots is that they excused any behaviour on the side of the police.
It becomes almost impossible to reasonably critique the police when the other side was that much worse.The protesters’ side wasn’t even close to being worse though? We caused property damage and threw some bottles and stones at people covered head-to-toe in armor.
The cops just attacked random civilians with batons, punching entirely peaceful people in the face, pepper-spraying reporters, pushing fleeing people of meters-high walls, driving into people with cars, breaking up lawful, peaceful demonstrations, willfully ignoring court orders and attacking peaceful people trying to camp, etc. And these are civil servants being PAID to supposedly protect the public. As you see in this picture they had no interest in doing their jobs, otherwise they would have arrested more people, they just wanted to beat up people.
The only you would think the protesters were worse is if you care more about violence against property than about violence against people.
Hamburg shopowners themselves in a joint statment said:
“We were more afraid of the armed special units aiming machine guns at our neighbors than of the alcoholic hooligans that let off steam here yesterday. They are stupid, annoying, and are breaking windows, but in case of doubt they will not shoot you.”
