here’s a fun idea

I would at least get rid of the out-dated Christian symbolism and convert the church into a theatre / night club. People needs three spaces to feel like whole citizens; Home, Work and Leisure spaces. All those three matters. A church was already “the third place”, but now can easily replaced by a theatre / night club. Capitalism have however replaced “leisure” with “commerce” and that’s why malls exists.  

This isn’t about a balance of ‘home, work and leisure’ or whatever. 
Like, someone took a free accessible black community space of religeous significance land turned it into a private white home. That is first and foremost a very racist act and a rich taking away free community spaces from the poor act. 

And calling a church ‘outdated’ when 53% (or like a little more or less depending on the study but a very high number) of African Americans attend a religious service at least once a week is incredible. And ignoring the vital functions black churches in the US have historically always had as a social support system and an affirmation of black life in a society that hates black life. 

And like, a club or a theatre is another place that charges money and doesn’t inherently build community. Like how is a club in any way better than a mall it’s just another consumption space. 

What the fuck. 

(sidenote: this place was actually not purchased by a family but by a single white man who build a huge loft for himself and 7 spaces that he’s renting out. Which is just as gross to be honest.)
