I can not take someone seriously when they start their sentence with “well I have a degree in psychology and…”
DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW FUCKED UP PSYCHOLOGY IS.
HOW CAN YOU CLAIM AUTHORITY FROM THE FACT THAT YOU SPEND 4 TO 6 YEARS GETTING INDOCTRINATED IN THAT SHIT.
I TRUST YOUR OPINION LESS KNOWING THAT YOU THINK YOUR DEGREE IS GROUND TO SPEAK WITH AUTHORITY.
(And I am not saying you can’t learn useful shit from studying psychology at all, but like, it involves a hell of a lot of weeding through bad sexist ableist racist transphobic homophobic shit and unlearning all of that. And if you think saying a thing like “I have a degree in psychology
“ or “I worked as a …” gives you authority you have obviously done none of that critical analysis and unlearning and chances are what is about to come out of your mouth is absolutely terrible.)
Fucking this. The moment I read or hear those lines, I’m immediately skeptical and bracing for some bs to come spilling out.
It’s code for “I’m in a position of authority and my word trumps yours”, even if they don’t think it means that. Because they immediately start talking over people’s experiences with anything dealing with mental illness. Especially the stuff you mentioned. And most are completely oblivious to the mini-crisis going on psych research because much of it can’t be replicated. Which makes the validity of several theories and ideas doubtful.
I’ve had therapists pull the “labels are limiting” bs when I said I’m a disabled queer. I’ve had therapists give me shit for not looking them in the face when I talked. I’ve had some try to take diagnoses away and slap new ones on to explain my behaviors, largely because everyone and their fucking grandma hates neurodivergent people.
So the moment someone starts waving their fucking degree in my face, I know they can’t be trusted.
