So I know we all know about Rosa Parks in relation to the Montgomery
Bus Boycott and her work in the Civil Rights Movement, but how many people know
that Rosa Parks was also a huge anti-rape activist and helped found the
Committee of Equal Justice with rape survivor Recy Taylor. They traveled throughout
Alabama to gather stories about racially motivated crimes, including incidents
of sexual assault, and then pressured media outlets to report on the crimes. Like,
this was one of the first feminist sexual assault support committee’s and they’re
ignored in history because the founders were Black and also concerned with
civil rights.I’m reading so many academic articles that talk about how
rape crisis/support centers started in the 1970’s with white feminism and like…
okay, let’s just erase decades upon decades of Black feminist activism and
protest of rape and sexual violence.@bluebowties-xo I didn’t know this do you have more links so I can learn more?
@lawthehybrid1027 So one great book to check out is At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape and Resistance—A New History of the Civil Rights Movement From Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power by Danielle L. McGuire.
Some articles to check out are this one from Rewire, this one by the Washington Post which talks about some of the cases Rosa Parks worked on and her own experience with sexual assault, this article and this article by theGrio also talk about some of the more public sexual assault cases Rosa Parks worked on, this article by Ms. Magazine and this article by the OCRCC deliberately call out the white washing of the anti-rape movement, and for a quick overview of the anti-sexual assault movement in general, you can check out this article here.
Hope these help!
