Even with the disruptions, it was incredibly obvious that had the vote been allowed to go through undisrupted, it would have resulted in a massive majority for independence. Not a single analyst doubted that and the votes that did get counted confirm it by a landslide.
But to be clear: what I support is not a Catalan state or a Catalan police or Catalan nationalism. I do not support any state or police or nationalism. Nor do I think referendums and voting are the best way for a people to decide their future.
What I reject is the Spanish state violence to disrupt the referendum and any further violence by the Spanish state to disrupt what happens next. What I support is for the Catalan people to be allowed to figure out their future for themselves, without intervention from the Spanish state.
I do not think a Catalan state will be the best answer for the Catalan people, I hope at some point the Catalan people will see that too and will choose no government but complete self-government
and will fight for that. I hope that is a path all people will some day choose. But it seems clear to me that as long as Catalonia remains under Spanish rule, that injustice will be on the top of their list of political priorities.
