I generally agree with the sentiment that goes “millenials in their late 20s are acting less like the adults of the past (settling down, buying houses, having kids, mowing lawns, etc) because capitalism has failed them” but I disagree with the often included implication that we should strive for a returned to the pre-millenial stability with the end goal being that millenials can finally settle down and grow up.

I mean, sure, more financial security would be a step up from the hellscape we live in, but I would be so sad if millenials would lose what they have learned one they got a steady paycheck. Economically we can do much better than a return to pre-2009 capitalism (like we could redistribute all resources) but emotionally we can do better too.

Adulthood as we know it is a violent manipulative concept designed for population control and it does not bring the happiness or mental health it promises to bring. Your ‘settled down’ peers just look happier because they’ve build themselves a more comfortable cage with a superiority complex that demands seeming outwardly like you’ve got it all figured out.

The economic hellhole of this capitalist society is something we should fight but the ‘arrested development’ of a generation on their way to assimilation into all the oppressive forces of ‘adulthood’ is something we should celebrate. Who knows what else our lives could develop into when we do not settle into the cages build for us.
