hot take: the capitalist cultural construction of “humans are naturally greedy and self-centered” is just an attenuated version of the feudal christian construction of “humans are inherently sinful”; both are designed to make people internalize cultural problems and externalize morality.
We also constantly inintentionally see this reproduced in activism in forms like
“Humans (not 3 rich dudes) destroyed the environment and if you own a phone or left a light on at night you should feel bad.”
“We are all inherently privileged and we must atone for this is every conversation, listing our sins and hoping to be forgiven.”
“Look at all the horrible injustice in the world. Am I doing enough? Are you doing enough? Am I doing enough? Are you doing enough? Am I doing enough?”
And other forms
We come from our life under christianity, our life under capitalism, our lives as unloved weird children and we feel full of guilt and unworthiness and our first impulse is to find a place to reproject that guilt so we can atone for our sins and viciously attack others and maybe one day feel like we’re enough.
