Blind spot check:
1. Open your favourite playlist. Make sure it’s a mixed playlist with a lot of different musicians.
2. Look at the names, how many men and bands with a male lead singer are there? how many women? Don’t gloss over them, really count them and compare. Are you surprised by the result?
3. Don’t worry too long about your playlist, it’s just a playlist. But ask yourself: what other, more important spaces, have a composition that you didn’t notice before? Your job? Your classroom? That conference you went to? That festival? If you are male and white, how often are you in a mostly white, mostly male space without noticing?
