the only way to resolve the recovery / anti-recovery dichotomy is full communism. until that point, any therapeutic/recovery tool ppl find will be distorted into a mechanism of control for someone else who then will react against it. anyway the needs of recovery are actually fairly simple: material support (especially basic resources like housing, food, clothing), talking w ppl & getting emotional support, exercises and stretches to work out bound trauma, medical support (which can even just mean things like “weed & calming herbs”, depending on the person), roleplaying in safe contexts, establishing boundaries and self-definition, confrontation with triggers & support around responses, developping the ability to narrate one’s own experiences, developping self-confidence & autonomy skills, etc. it is no great secret; It Is Known. the problem is that as long as the society people need to adjust into is actively harmful, “recovery” will inevitably be harmful and abusive in some contexts. at the same time, as long as we live in a harmful society, psychosis and the like will also replicate socially harmful forms since the content of psychosis/neurosis/etc is drawn from the social environment, so being “anti-recovery” will also inevitably be abusive and harmful in some contexts. there is no way to have a correct universal politics around recovery when that means “recovering” into a hostile, harmful, and often abusive society. the only solution to the needs of mentally disabled (classed) people is social change on a level that is neither just material nor just ideological. capitalism and wellbeing are incompatible.
