TIL that the United States consumes over 90% of the world’s stimulant drugs, and that there has been a 700% increase in the use of these drugs since 1990.

24/7 capitalism pushes people to abuse stimulants imo

oh absolutely. the use and abuse of stimulants is heavily influenced and demanded by capitalism. From the overconsumption of coffee during the Industrial Revolution, to vyvanse & ritalin abuse on present day college campuses, to food service workers doing cocaine during breaks, to truck drivers taking methamphetamines, our society is full of workers pushing themselves to the utmost physical and psychological limits to keep working at the breakneck pace and long hours that are demanded of them in order to earn a living.

“work” and "productivity,” and, ultimately, “profit” are the objects that rule us. This is capitalism, where humans are sacrificed for the benefit of the inhuman “capital.”

And then there’s yuppies who microdose psychedelics to be more creative at work… :/

I sure do love how capitalism gave me a mental illness that is effectively treated by stimulants, if I lived in a communist country I’d never have to take meds because ADHD just wouldn’t exist!

>inb4 y’all say some ableist nonsense about how I wouldn’t need it outside of capitalist work paradigms

I can’t function as *I want to* without meds even outside of work

Hey, I know some really nasty people are talking about high rates of medication use in a way that is ableist and makes it seem like people are making a bad personal choice by using meds. That’s shitty. I don’t think this post is trying to do any of that but it could have distanced itself from that shit more explicitly.

To me, this post is specifically about people who feel the pressure to take meds or to take more meds because capitalism requires them to function in a specific way. Like:

  • Doing heavy physical work
  • Doing emotionally difficult work
  • Doing highly stressful work
  • Doing very very boring work
  • Doing any kind of
    work 40+ hours a week

while there are so many other things you want to be doing

  • Concentrating at a set time for hours in a row, regardless of whether you’re good at concentrating today
  • Concentrating in a space that causes you to be overstimulated or is in some other way not accomodating your needs
  • Working with only very short breaks
  • Working with people who are treating them badly
  • Being consistently creative regardless of whether inspiration strikes
  • Performing a neurotypical persona because being different isn’t seen ‘professional’
  • Pretending to be happy because revealing that you don’t always feel fine will also be punished
  • etc
  • etc

There are non-neurotypical and mentally ill people out there writing and talking about how this effects them extra strongly because workplaces are ableist. And about how they would probably choose less or different meds if they weren’t forced to perform neurotypicalness and to work in a space that does not accomodate any of their needs.

If this doesn’t feel relavant to you perfectly, that’s fine. If you would take the exact same amount of the same type of meds in any other situation, that’s fine.

This isn’t about pressuring anyone to change anything about your behavior or to make taking meds seem like the wrong choice.
