One thing that’s missing from modern anarchism is an embrace of whimsical, artistic weirdness. We’re so serious in these dark times that most of us lost unpredictable chaos as a creative source and a strategic asset.
Like, in the 60′s in the Netherlands the Provo’s performed ecstatic
screams and surprise stripteases in public, a guy drilled a hole into his skull for extra air, a person who called himself a magician held speeches no one could understand and opened a temple dedicated to rejecting sigarettes. They experimented with alternative ways to live your life in a very public way (that included more than a little sex an drugs) and they were not afraid to be incredibly strange in the process. From all that weirdness bubbled new ideas and actions and people kept joining because what they were doing wasn’t just activism, it was also fun.
But most to the point, it terrified the authorities. No protest was ever the same. There was no way to predict what these weird weird people would do next and the effect of that was incredibly powerful. The Provo’s could simply spread a ridiculous rumor (as they did frequently) and have the cops in Amsterdam running all over the city trying to protect their precious order.
Chaos. Unpredictability. Things to strange to understand. These are amazing weapons against order and we need an anarchist culture that treasures them.
