Jumping off on that post where I said that
fan fiction communities are experimenting in doing
collective creative work
that is so rare in a capitalist society that
views art as the product of a single genius…

It is so weird that novel writing is treated as such an isolated job.

The writer experiennce as described on Tumblr seems to be all about
writers block, self-doubt, getting stuck, hating your work… so I’m like… IF that’s your experience… have
you tried to harness the awesome power of collaboration?

The excitement when your co-writers come up with awesome ideas and you immediately want to respond with a short story about it? The incentive of wanting to give your co-writers a gift? Loving their characters so much you want to put them on awesome adventures? Collaborative writing is a fucking explosion of creativity.

If you’ve never written that way, try it. Don’t try to structure it, don’t do a “ok here is the storyline, I write chapter 2, you write chapter 3″. Just make a little private forum online and write shit together. Don’t collab with one person. Include two dozen people. Experience the whirl of excitement that comes from constantly being inspired by each others ideas. Produce a hundred stories. Write silly stuff to entertain. Ask others for a little cheer me up fic when you feel sad. Produce a looooooot of stuff and then together see if it becomes a novel.

Apply that shit to painting too, and sculpture, poster design, movies, songs. Collaborative art. It’s fucking magic.
