The fact that ‘cultural appropriation’ and just ‘appropriation’ get used as if they’re very similar things is unhelpful. They’re nothing alike.

I’m sorry but someone outside the LGBT+ community saying that they ‘came out of the closet’ about a part of their identity is not the same as the most sacred parts of your culture being marketed as trinkets to the culture that tried to destroy you. It’s just not.

This way of talking about appropriation erases the whole dynamic of colonialism from the understanding of cultural appropriation.
