When we say there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, we mean every single product. As long as profit rules, humans, animals and nature will suffer.
Choices can be made to minimize damage, but it’s impossible to have true ethical consumption under capitalism. Every product will cause damage.
The point of the examples above is that most of those ‘choices’ are deceptive. They are made an economy driven by profit and the ‘ethical consumption’ styled brands that rise to the top in such an economy are the ones that can profit most from the newest ‘ethical consumption’ fad.Those are not the ones doing the least damage, as ethical production is never going to be the most profitable. We are simply being lied to.
In a few rare cases choices are undeniably reducing the damage of your consumption, like not eating meat. But many ethical consumption choices are entirely useless at best and harmful at worst.
Even if they’re started by passionate activists with the best intentions – this is how many ‘fair trade’ brands once started – profit eventually turns them into the same shit that came before them.So unless you want to do intense background research on every single product you buy and frequently check up on that research to make sure it’s still true (and I don’t recommend spending all your energy on that, there are better ways to improve the world than to manicure your consumer habits), there is
