katy perry kissed a 19 year old american idol contestant without his consent during an audition. he was uncomfortable and had been saving his first kiss for somebody special. please don’t let this be ignored just because the victim is male.
If you’re having trouble pushing past sexist socialization to see just how creepy this is, imagine if a 33 year old guy did this to a 19 year old girl who was auditioning.
It took me a while to realize why this addition felt weird. It basically says “If you do not see the consent violation because the usual man-woman power inequality wasn’t there, let me point you towards the older-younger power inequality instead”.
& like…. a consent violation is a consent violation no matter what the power dynamic is? Yes, consent variations happen more when there is a power dynamic, and Katy Perry clearly used her position of power over the contestant to do this.
Like, please, let’s talk about how often women overlook all their positions of power, be it age, money, fame, race, or being in a jury facing a contestant, but let’s not pretend that that is what makes it a consent violation. But if both people were the same age and in all the same positions of power otherwise, it would STILL be a consent violation.
