anti-trafficking laws hurt the victims a hell of a lot more than the traffickers, and more often than not forces independent sex workers into trafficking. funny how you treat the people you’re claiming to protect as if we’re expendable.
it’s about time that sex workers stand up to these abusive laws. they deserve better.
you act like we haven’t been standing up to them for ages. we absolutely deserve better, but weirdly enough we can’t be the only ones fighting for our right and our lives — especially not in countries where our existence is criminalized. you, civilians, need to step it the fuck up.
How can civilians help make things safer for sex workers? Are there any organizations and /or politicians that support decriminalization?
support the organizations linked in the above post, for starters; do some research, get involved in your local chapter of SWOP, HIPS if you’re DC-based, support ho(s)e if you’re chgo or NYC based; if you’re outside of the US support—ideologically and monetarily—international and local sex worker outreach projects, like the above-linked red umbrella fund; get involved in harm reduction in your area and local government focusing on decrim, housing reform, and harm reduction — community-level changes in arrest and support policies are 100% feasible and no less important for the fact theyre limited; use your relative safety and platform to disseminate activism and information so that we’re not the only ones talking — centering the voices of the affected doesn’t mean keeping your mouth shut and your hands behind your back, it means handing us a megaphone and standing with us; if you’re in academia, push for more research promoting decrim and debunking so-called anti-trafficking activism; support individual sex workers, whether that means sourcing your porn ethically or helping your favorite long-winded hooker afford to eat.
