Heyy! Do you know where bigots using “kweer” as an insult came from? I have seen it weirdly enough, come from leftist people as “kweer centrists” as well as alt right people as “kweer liberals” and just “kweer” in general?? I find it really disgusting, especially since I identify mainly as queer myself, and am studying queer theory as a part of studying social work at uni. Also, I adore this blog to bits!!

Setting aside the usage of “kweer” in the context of Asian queer identities as an extension of transliterations like “kuia”, as well as literally being the word for “queer” in some european languages, as well as being an anti-colonial Black spelling of queer.

Using “kweer” as an insult against anti-assimilationist queers, especially trans and a-spec people, stems from radical feminists.

Specifically, Trans-exterminatory ones.

It’s not quite a Tumblr Original™,  though tumblr TERFs popularized the term in summer 2016, when radical feminists decided that the dyke march wasn’t sufficiently exclusionary for them. 

Although the term was popularized by tumblr TERFs, it was originally used by more traditional TERFs in lesbian separatist forums.

Since the popularization of the insult by TERFs, it has been adopted by all manner of exclusionists, and subsequently by your average transphobe alt-right conservatives as well.

The origin of the term is, as you might expect, a purposeful phonetic misspelling of “queer.” The intention is to suggest trans people don’t actually know anything about being “really queer,” right down to how to spell the word.

Like all insults based on spelling mockery, it has severely racist implications, and would even without the fact that the term was already in use by various QPOC.
