the real “problem with political correctness” is not that it’s considered offensive to use slurs, but that there are now many “progressive” environments where saying the right things is more important than doing the right thing. it’s why it’s so easy for abusers to gain traction in leftist circles (they learn the right words quickly and employ them to frame their own behavior as progressive); it’s why so much potential activist energy gets poured into fighting about language; it’s why moderate liberals didn’t believe fer/guson had a problem until the police emails with actual racist language were leaked. (you can do racist things, you just can’t SAY racist things.) i don’t have a neat conclusion here but a related point is that i’m so much happier since i started focusing on like, being a good kind caring person instead of trying to remove the word “crazy” from the vocabulary of everyone in my family
the last line of this is getting some uhhhh Comments.
- i prefaced that with “a related point is” because it is not a direct corollary to the main point of the post, and i probably wouldn’t have included it if i knew this would get thousands of notes, because it’s kind of changing the subject and that’s what we call “bad writing”
- i did not say that i love ableism and hate mentally ill people. this should not come as a surprise on tumblr dot com but i and pretty much everyone i know is mentally ill, and surprise! different people have different opinions
- i did not say that every use of the word “crazy” is totally acceptable (i used that word as an example because in my opinion it’s a waste of time and energy to try to eliminate words that have deeply entrenched colloquial meanings. i think actually challenging the relationship of x thing to mental illness is more useful than “don’t say that.”)
- i did not say that language doesn’t matter
- i did not say that i’m a “good activist” or even that i’m an activist at all
- this single paragraph does not represent my entire political philosophy
it’s really nice outside let’s all go smell a flower or something
That was supposed to be the point (your last sentence) of progressivism in general.
I really get the feeling that a huge part is people that are, for all intents and purposes, hipsters took it over and steered things to try to give themselves the most gain rather than the old trajectory which was towards actual progress.
Damn. Way to prove OP’s point, other commenters.
