Amsterdam tourism crackdown, people over profit

So this is pretty cool news: Amsterdam FIGHTS back: Airbnb and boozy bike tours to be banned in tourism crackdown

Basically, the left-wing city council of Amsterdam is FINALLY listening to years or pressure from grassroot activists and curbing tourism in Amsterdam, prioritizing those living in the city over the profit tourists bring.

Parts of the plans include:

  • Banning the use of AirBnB for more than 3 months a year per apartment and complete bans in areas where AirBnB is a big problem
  • Much higher tourism taxes
  • Restrictions on recreational travel like group-bikes, horse-draws carriages and segways
  • New rules for tourguides givingn tours to very large groups
  • Restrictions on touringcars, busses, touringboats
  • Banning of all cruiseships within the city
  • Restrictions on large shoppingchains and restaurantchains that create a consumer mono-culture, prioritizing of local stores and restaurants
  • Transformation of the Amsterdam Marketing bureau into the Amsterdam Culture Infocentre

Importantly, they do NOT seem to be blaming or cracking down on sex workers and drugs as previous governments have done.

I’m happy about this.
