Why is every post about “cop propaganda on TV” about brooklyn 99, a lighthearted comedy, and not Cops, a 30-year-long show whose entire content is “Watch Officers Chase Down and Arrest These Horrible Criminals In Real Life to Keep You Safe” that has actually been studied to vastly over-represent black men as perpetrators and white people as victims or non-violent offenders and has a measurable effect on its viewers perceptions of police and of races different from their own.
Weird how one of the most diverse, inclusive comedies on TV right now is taking the most criticism in this area.

Brooklyn99 is talked about more because:
– it’s a show many people on Tumblr watch or have watched
– it’s specifically presented as this ‘progressive’ show that is going to somehow make the world better while being cop propaganda
That’s it. People write about what they know. Hypocricy gets more attention than open bigotry.
That’s why bad things in Harry Potter are analyzed on here more than bad things in books that were popular at different times and among different demographics and that didn’t claim to be progressive.
That’s why a gay rights activist who is popular on Tumblr and says a racist thing will be talked about way more than a Republican senator who does the same.
The people who criticize Brooklyn99 are not doing it because they hate diversity, they’re doing it because they’re excited to finally see some diversity but not happy that it’s cop propaganda.
People write about what they know. Hypocricy gets more attention than open bigorty. That’s all there is to it.
And really, ‘progressive’ cop propaganda is just as bad as more blatant cop propaganda. It serves a distinct function for a distinct population. The blatant cop propaganda is targetted at people who already like cops. Brooklyn99 is targetted at the people who are too informed to swallow the blatant propaganda but can still be convinced that there are good cops and that the police can be reformed. Its diversity makes it more effective propaganda for this audience.
So yeah. Fuck cop propaganda.
