60 year old historian Martin Bühler (who identified himself to the press, I do not identify activists without consent) appears to ‘photobomb’ a lot of media images of the G20 in Hamburg. In reality he is a long time observer documenting police brutality. In Hamburg he chose to cultivate the most non-activist ‘white bystander in a suit with a bike’ look he could manage and casually walked in front of police. As police slowed down or interrupted attacks and waited for the ‘bystander’ to get out of the way (being caught on camera trashing what look like bystanders is bad press after all), activists had time to regroup or retreat.

Thats cool. Can you show the black block that invaded Hamburg, set tons of innocent bystanders cars on fire, attacked random people, and destroyed tons of private property? Or we just gonna show just enough so the narrative of “peaceful protest” isn’t ruined?

We sure can! A black block dress is common sense when you’re bound to be criminalized no matter what your protest methods and property destruction is a very useful tactic to hurt a system that values profits over people, to drive up the costs of future G-summits and to shatter the illusions of the total surveillance state.

There was some trouble with undercover cops trying to stage attacks and trying to infiltrate groups to change their direction, as well as far-right scum trying to make the left look bad while looting for themselves. Nonetheless local and out-of-town activists organized effective actions together trashing banks and mayor chainstores as well as targetting expensive cars and posh shops in poor neighbourhoods threatened with gentrification.

Here’s some love for our fantastic heroes in black.
