If you wanna see systematic exclusion, check out the fees of the International Aids Conference happening in Amsterdam right now:
- Registration: 500-1200 euros
- One-day pass: 320-565 euros
Jup, that’s 565 euros for a single day if you’re from a ‘high income country’, no matter what your own situation is. This includes the ‘population-specific pre-conferences’ they’ve announced to seem oh so progressive.
This is intentional, done to make sure only fancy big-hospital-sponsored doctors and pharmaceutical companies can access this space, and activists and HIV-positive people actually effected by these conferences can not get in.
They have a big list of sponsors and they can afford to let the media in for free, but if you’re a person effected by the issue, you need to be rich to matter.
And this is nothing exceptional. The WPATH conference on Transgender Care in Amsterdam charged 300-1000 euros for attendance.
By the way, if you wanna shout at the people responsible, try twitter: @AIDS_conference and
