queeranarchism:

It’s so annoying to see how communities that claim commitment to celebrating diversity in identities and ways to live your life and the right to experience your sexuality any way you want, still continue to reproduce content that is incredibly sex-negative and generally different-negative.

Like, ‘oh noooooo someone I met turned out to be a furry’ continues to be a common joke and ‘lol people wanna fuck monsters’ is pretty popular both targeted at others and as a self-deprecating joke. The ‘delete this post’ stuff under kinky puns? Yeah, that too

And like, even when it claims to be sarcastic and silly and harmless, it’s so clearly NOT producing a ‘sexual diversity is good’ vibe at all. And a lot of it is so clearly old “lol, you gay or something?’ jokes repackaged and it keeps getting repackaged with a different target but it’s the same message.

You could make up a new sexual interest that literally nobody has and start mocking that and even though there would be absolutely no real targets you would STILL be contributing to the idea that your sexuality isn’t allowed to be too weird, that there are limits, that the endless possibilities of humans to find pleasure in concepts and acts and fantasies is something other than dazzlingly beautiful.

By the way, when I talk about getting rid of our harmful atitude towards any kind of ‘weird’ sex, I do not mean that sexual things get a special ‘always good’ status because it’s sex. I mean that sex should be treated just like everything else.

A sexual performance, a sexual community, a pornographic movie, etc is just as capable of being racist, sexist, transphobic, etc as every other performance, community and movie. ‘consent’ doesn’t magically make that go away. It’s not worse or better because there is sex, it is just like everything else.

If you’re following me you know that I am frequently critical of how we reproduce harmful dynamics in our sexual lives and how we bring oppressive dynamics into the communities we build around sexuality, but that’s always coming from a love of sexuality and the many fantastic forms it can take.

These jokes and attitudes are… not that. The joke is that it is about sex* and it’s weird, and that’s where the negativity comes from.

(*furry things are not always and not even often about sex, but the jokes are definitely framed that way and when jokes are made at the expense of furries there is always a sexual aspect assumed.)
