An Educational and Solidarity Event sponsored by OPIRG Toronto and supported by the Anarchist Network of Toronto

*please message page for room details*

Event Description:

While right-wing groups are becoming more and more active in Toronto, anti-racist and anti-fascist activists seek new strategies to resist the threat. A good way to build a stronger movement is to look at other countries and movements around the world. This event is dedicated to Russian antifascists, their contemporary struggles, tactics and the repressions against them. What can we learn from the Russian case? How can we better organize to prevent similar waves of repressions and violence in Canada?

This solidarity event is not just a “support event”. It is open for everyone who is interested in learning about recent developments of Russian anarchist theory and practice. The event is focused on the history of contemporary Russian antifascist and anarchist struggles, it features a documentary film screening and discussion. The event is animated by a Russian anarchist and researcher Xenia currently based in Toronto.

Since October 2017, 11 Russian antifascists are being kept in pre-trial detention or under house arrest for a fabricated “terrorist” case, known under the codename “Network Case” (Delo Seti). They risk severe sentences up to 20 years of imprisonment. They have been tortured with electroshock, beaten up and humiliated by Russian special service, the FSB. Their prison conditions are very difficult: solitary confinement, refuse of medical assistance, psychological pressure and physical aggression. More people are currently at risk, associated with the same case, a number of activists has already left the country to seek political asylum.

Russian activists need a strong international support! Solidarity and media attention can help to drastically reduce their prison sentences and to cover legal and medical fees for imprisoned comrades.

Please come and spread the word, invite your friends, share the event everywhere! Let’s learn together to build international solidarity, let’s show that we care!
Let’s write as many support letters to jail as we can – every word from the “free world” counts for our imprisoned comrades and keeps their spirits up!
