Remember that the biggest ones are outside the US and you can’t really influence them except by buying local products and boycotting international ones.
China is building large numbers of concrete buildings and powering them with coal-fired electricity. They are also the largest contributor of plastic into the ocean, leaving the US in 12th place.
American emissions are actually on a downward trend. The only reason Chinese per-capita emissions are relatively low is because they have more than 3x the US population.
Pretending that it’s all about China seems like a diversion.
Yes, China is responsible for 26% of CO2 emission with 18% of the world population and that’s an important fact but the EU+US are responsible for 24% with just 11% of the world population. That’s also important.
And actually, the US is NOT on a downward trend anymore. It is projected that US CO2 emissions will rise 1.8%, from 5,143 million metric tons in 2017 to 5,237 million metric tons in 2018.
We can’t pretend that it’s all about China, it’s also very much about
ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Chevron, Peabody, Total, and BHP Billiton. Those 7 companies alone are responsible for 9.5% of all CO2 emission.
We can’t pretend that the people that are getting rich from destroying the planet are all foreign and far away. Or that there isn’t action we can take to shut them down.
